Rally against Domestic and Family Violence – Sunday 11 October

Rockhampton Regional Council, government agencies and community groups are calling on residents to march together for the Safer Families, Better Communities rally as a stance against domestic violence on Sunday 11 October.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said joining the march would send a strong message that domestic and family violence will not be tolerated in our Region.

“I stand against domestic violence and want our community to do the same, so I’m calling on residents to all come together and march on Sunday 11 October to show that as a community we stand as one,” Mayor Strelow said.

“Domestic violence doesn’t discriminate. It affects people of all ages, races and income levels so we need to continue raising awareness of services and support, and ensure domestic violence prevention remains top of mind.

“There’s no doubt that as a united voice we can make a difference and help those who are vulnerable across our region.”

Mayor Strelow said community groups and support agencies involved in helping people affected by domestic violence would lead the march.

“Community groups such as Anglicare, the Women’s Shelter, Relationships Australia, Women’s Health along with Council, state and federal agency representatives will march and be on-hand to meet and mingle afterwards,” she said.

“It’s absolutely vital that we all join together, adopt a community zero-tolerance stance on domestic violence, and support those who need it most.” 

Rockhampton will host three marches – Gracemere at 9am, Mount Morgan at 10am and Rockhampton at 11am on Sunday 11 October.

Donations for the Rockhampton Women’s Shelter will be collected at each march.

The Safer Families, Better Communities campaign is an initiative of the Local Government Association of Queensland to publicly condemn domestic violence. Councils across Queensland will rally on Sunday 11 October.

                                    Meet beside School of Arts and march along Morgan Street, returning to the School of Arts

                                    Meet at Stapleton Park and march across the Fitzroy Bridge to Riverside Park
