A ‘sign’ of the times ahead: Council invites designers to tender

Rockhampton Regional Council invites written offers from artists, graphic designers, sign designers or architects to artistically design prominent directional and promotional signage that reflects the character and identity of the Rockhampton Region.
The Major Signage Project is the first major development aimed at improving the visibility of major attractions, identifying significant precincts and promoting upcoming events.
Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said, “some of our most beautiful spots are also our best kept secrets - it's time to share them with visitors and newcomers.
“It is particularly exciting that local artists and designers will be able to develop concepts that are truly representative of our Region.
“We don’t want to see replicas of other regions or flat two dimensional road signs– we want innovative designs that are functional, yet portray a unique sense of place through design, use of materials and theming.”
Regional Promotions Manager Sarah Reeves said that informative and creative signage is a fundamental basis for placemaking, and that the project would deliver a positive first step towards revitalising the Region.
“Well designed signage tells a story – it should promote our best assets and portray where we are heading as a Region,” she said.
For this reason, the project will be delivered in two stages; design and construction.
“Interested designers of varying backgrounds are encouraged to submit an Invitation to Offer, providing details of their experience, examples of previous work and cost for producing a detailed concept design.
“All offers received will be evaluated by a selection panel based on previous experience, examples of previous work and the cost for developing concepts, with a strong preference given to Rockhampton Region locals,” Ms Reeves said.
Successful applicants from Stage One will be given two weeks to develop and present a detailed concept design, for which they will be paid regardless of whether their designs are selected.
To submit an invitation to offer, complete the registration for Major Signage Designer on the Council website via the link on the right hand side.

Submissions will be received up to the closing time of 2pm Friday, May 29, 2015.
