Above and beyond for Kerrigan Street Pedestrian Underpass

One of Rockhampton’s busiest roundabouts has received a major safety upgrade following completion of a $590,000 underpass at Kerrigan Street and Moores Creek Road, Norman Gardens.
Jointly funded by Council and the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants program, the underpass delivers safer access for cyclists and pedestrians travelling through the area.
Over 150 metres of newly constructed shared pathway also links the underpass to the existing pathways alongside busy Moores Creek Road, providing cyclists and pedestrians with a safe off road option.
With a state funding contribution of $295,000, Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke said the project was a key element in providing better connectivity and increased safety for all road users.
“We are proud to fund yet another critical project in the Rockhampton region,” Mr O’Rourke said.
“These works are part of the $17 million investment the Queensland Government is making to support the delivery of safe cycling infrastructure by local governments across the state in 2017-18.
“We know that, on average, every dollar we invest in cycling infrastructure will return nearly five dollars in economic benefit to Queensland with improved health outcomes, reduced traffic congestion, and lower transport costs.”
Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow thanked the State Government for their contribution towards road and cycleway network upgrades and said the underpass was an essential piece of infrastructure to improve connectivity.
“Everyone knows that this is one of our busiest intersections, connecting nearby shopping centres and schools and the city. It was one area in particular need of a safer alternative for pedestrians and bicycle riders, and we are proud to have worked together to deliver this for the community,” Mayor Strelow said.
“Infrastructure upgrades like this are critical for our growing community, making it easier, safer and giving peace of mind for children and families who no longer need to run the risk of crossing a busy road.”
