With the countdown to Christmas now on, Rockhampton Regional Council is reminding residents of the benefits of adoption when it comes to gifting a pet.

Planning and Regulation Councillor Grant Mathers said Christmas gifts should always suit the receiver, especially when it comes to a long-term commitment like a pet.

“For individuals who are looking to add to their family by welcoming a pet at Christmas, we suggest they consider adopting and not shopping for a new animal,” Cr Mathers said.

“While buying a puppy is a cute choice, we are asking the community to consider other options like pet adoption that comes with plenty of benefits.

“By choosing to adopt and not shop, you are giving the animals in our animal management centre and local rescue shelters a second chance this Christmas.

“By opting to adopt, families are giving an animal, who is without a family, the opportunity to experience love and security in a permanent home, something many may never have known.”

Cr Mathers also reminded residents that with animal adoption comes responsibility which is important to remember prior to bringing home the new pet.

“Adopting a pet at Christmas means giving a gift that lasts far beyond the holiday season,” Cr Mathers advised.

“Some good questions to ask yourself first are whether you can afford to care for a pet long-term, what pet would best suit your lifestyle, and whether you know how to appropriately care for that pet.”

The festive season is a busy time for rescue shelters, as RSPCA Qld Spokesperson Emma Lagoon said they expect to see 2,800 animals come through their doors looking for a second chance.

“If you are looking for a pet, please consider adopting and changing a life,” Ms Lagoon said.

“Adopting a pet also has benefits including saving you initial pet costs like desexing, microchipping, vet health checks and vaccinations.

“When you adopt a cat or dog from the RSPCA you also receive a free bag of Royal Canin pet food to set them up in your home.

“We also have a post-adoption pet support team who can help with any questions about your adopted animal.”

When adopting, it is important to remember that every pet is an individual.

“Pets may settle in like they’ve always been part of your family, or they may take a few weeks to get used to their routine,” Ms Lagoon said.

“Helping your pet adjust to your new home will depend on the type of animal you adopt and if you already have pets at home too.

“We have tips on our rspcaqld.org.au website with how to introduce pets to existing family members and more.”
