Looking to make a fresh start in the new year, and start building the business you’ve been dreaming of? Applications are open to take part in the Rockhampton Region’s own start-up incubator, Turbo-Traction Lab, so apply now to hit the ground running in 2020!

Turbo-Traction Lab is an 80 day workshop designed to allow both full-time and part-time founders to build their business and gain traction in the global market with hands-on assistance from world-class experts.

The program is possible thanks to a $500,000 Federal Government incubator grant, $116,000 from Council plus in-kind support worth $77,000, and a generous contribution of $77,000 from Rocky expat and technology entrepreneur Bevan Slattery.

Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry said that it has been incredible to see the range of ideas fostered at the Lab.

“As we near the end of Turbo-Traction Lab 2, this is a great opportunity to look back on the wins that the first two cohorts of entrepreneurs have got on the board.

“The participants – many of whom have travelled from across the country for this program – have launched some incredible products, landed their first national and international sales, forged great business relationships, and made some fantastic strides toward creating thriving global businesses.

“I can’t wait to see what the next cohort of entrepreneurs will do.”

Acting Mayor Cherie Rutherford said the Rockhampton Region is fast gaining a reputation as an attractive hub for start-ups thanks to the SmartHub and the Turbo-Traction Lab program.

“The Lab is not just a series of talks and to-do lists – it is an intensive and hands-on program designed to guide dedicated founders as they launch thriving international businesses.

“I want to take a moment to recognise the entrepreneurs who have taken up this opportunity so far. They have worked incredibly hard, and absolutely thrived through the Lab.

“I would also like to recognise the guidance provided by our entrepreneur in residence, Daniel Johnsen, and an incredible line-up of world-class experts.

“Daniel is a successful entrepreneur in his own right, and was recently granted a Global Talent Independent Visa in recognition of his skills and experience. This Visa program is designed to attract skilled migrants in future focused fields to Australia, and promotes opportunities for Australians by transferring skills, promoting innovation, and creating job opportunities.

“This is an absolutely fantastic program led by an expert team, and I would encourage anyone with a great business idea to apply.

“Applications for Turbo-Traction Lab 3 are open until 15 January 2020, so get your applications in now.”

Emily Kinsella, founder of Settle Petal Yoga Mats and a participant of Turbo-Traction Lab 2, said through the program she was able to make her first international sale and begin the process of securing her first international wholesaler.

“Turbo-Traction Lab is just amazing,” said Ms Kinsella.

“I wouldn’t have thought that a first time entrepreneur like myself would have had quick access to world-class mentors that guided me through every step to build my business.

“I’m now focused on building repeat customers and other international relationships to get my great product to the masses.”
