BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities has proven their commitment towards the Region’s recovery after today announcing a $250,000 donation to the ‘Fill a Fridge’ initiative.
Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow says the significance of this contribution will help support more people than envisaged.
“This gesture from BHP is a wonderful humanitarian response to the disaster that has struck our community,” Mayor Strelow said.
“As we add up the donations received in just three days, we are well on our way to providing food assistance to those affected, however we still have a long way to go.”
Mayor Strelow says while the support from BHP is overwhelming, so too is the amount of people who are seeking support to recover household items and provide food for their families.
"The Salvation Army has already handed out $40,000 in food assistance since Tuesday after more than 350 families walked through their doors,” she said.
As well as the $250,000 donation, BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities will donate two dollars for every one dollar donated by an employee through the BHP Billiton Matched Giving Program.
