The importance of microchipping your pets has been highlighted in a heartwarming tale with a Rockhampton veterinary surgery reunited with their beloved cat, Zarraffas more than two months after going missing.

He returned home to the High Street Vet this week, thanks to his microchip and some help of Rockhampton Regional Council.

Chair of Council’s Planning & Regulatory Committee Cr Ellen Smith said Zarraffas arrived at the Rockhampton Pound last week and following a routine microchip scan, was soon on his way home.

“Seeing Zarraffas reunited with his family at High St Vet is a perfect example of why all residents should microchip their pets and keep their contact details up to date,” Cr Smith said.

“It really is crucial for times like this. No one wants their pet to go missing, but if that ever happens, this undoubtedly increases their chances of returning home.”

The minute, embedded microchip saw Zarraffas reunited with a tearful Dr Jocelyn Birch Baker on August 15.

“We often work with the Rockhampton Pound to help find the owners of pets brought to us and we can’t speak highly enough of the staff.  To have them call us and say they had found Zarraffas was wonderful,” Dr Birch Baker said.

“Microchipping is something we regularly perform and promote and we know firsthand just how important it is.”

Dr Birch Baker said once resettled, Zarraffas will be able to reclaim his favourite place at the surgery – the reception desk. Sprawled across the reception counter, the friendly feline often greets both two and four legged visitors as they arrive for appointments.

“It’s a sight that both staff and visitors have missed,” Dr Birch Baker said.

Fast facts on microchipping:

  • Microchipping can only be done by an authorised microchip provider such as a vet.
  • Microchips don’t wear off or fall off, they are a permanent form of identification.
  • Once microchipped, it’s important to ensure your contact and address details are current with both Council and the company in which your microchip was provided.
