Bring Australia into your garden!

Are you looking for a way to make your garden more beautiful? Would you like to do that while helping our natural environment? Then the Rockhampton Regional Council native plant giveaway is here to help!
Rockhampton Regional Council will be giving away three different types of native plants to residents this week as part of Council’s Bringing Nature Back initiative.
Environment Portfolio spokesperson, Councillor Donna Kirkland, said native plants were vitally important in the Rockhampton Region.
“Trees, shrubs and grasses play an important role in our streets, parks and riparian corridors, as well as in our very own backyards,” said Cr Kirkland.
“Not only do they provide food and shelter for wildlife, they give the region its unique character, have adapted to thrive in our area, and provide a cooler and more attractive environment for us to live in.
“That’s why, as part of our Bringing Nature Back initiative, we will be giving away three different types of native plants to residents of the Rockhampton Region this week!
“Pop into any of our Customer Service Centres on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday of this week and choose a giant palm lily, a holly leaf fuchsia, or a red flowered silky oak to spruce up your garden.
“You’ll get tips on how to plant it, how to care for it, and of course the satisfaction of knowing you’re helping to make our environment more beautiful and sustainable.
Parks Portfolio spokesperson, Councillor Cherie Rutherford, said the giveaway normally coincided with community tree planting events.
“Over 25 million trees have been planted by more than 4 million people at National Tree Day events since 1996.
“Usually we would be holding a number of events across the region but Planet Ark made the difficult decision not to run National Tree Day planting events this year.
“However this doesn’t mean you can’t still get involved! Why not plant your new free native plants in your garden for National Tree Day and share your pictures or videos with us? We would love to see them thriving in their new homes.
“Our Parks team has also been busy preparing for National Tree Day by planting almost 230 trees into a number of open spaces and sporting fields in June alone.”
Free native plants will be available on Tuesday 28th, Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th July 2020 at:
Rockhampton Customer Service Centre, City Hall, 232 Bolsover Street
Mount Morgan Customer Service Centre, next to the police station on Hall Street
Gracemere Customer Service Centre, inside Gracemere Library
All Customer Service Centres are open 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday.
Each resident can take up to two plants, just bring proof of address.
