Build your own Capital, brick by brick
Published on 09 November 2016
What’s your vision for our National Capital? You’ll get the chance to build it with LEGO™ from 9 November until 15 January when the National Capital Authority (NCA) tours its educational travelling exhibition Brick by Brick: Build Your Own Capital.
In partnership with Rockhampton Regional Council, the Brick by Brick: Build Your Own Capital exhibition was opened today at the Rockhampton Regional Library by Mayor Margaret Strelow.
“Our future creative minds or our young budding engineers and town planners of school age, who are fascinated with what our National Capital could look like, will have this wonderful opportunity to bring their imaginations to life with the iconic plastic bricks,” Mayor Strelow said.
“I’m looking forward to what our future capital could look like in the next couple of months through their eyes; There’s no doubt it will be educational and engaging, but also exciting to see some inspiring creations that might one day become a reality!”
The NCA’s Education and Outreach Coordinator, Roslyn Hull, commented that participants are encouraged to be creative and build a new National Capital using LEGOTM or replicate iconic national institutions and buildings in Canberra.
“As part of this education program, children and their families are asked to think about their future and their capital’s future, to explore what they would want to see in the Canberra of tomorrow. They can then let their ideas take shape and with over 30,000 LEGOTM bricks to play with, the possibilities are endless,” said Ms Hull.
Councillor Rose Swadling, Community Services Committee Chair, said the free exhibition was a fun, creative, and adventurous activity helping connect our region to our capital.
“What a fabulous, fun, interactive exhibition helping our young people connect Canberra to our region in terms of its history, importance and how it impacts on us; hopefully one day many of them will visit our capital to see first-hand,” Cr Swadling said.
“Our library is the perfect host for such an exhibition as the kids can research right there on the spot for inspiration as well.”
Brick by Brick is designed for children from four years of age and is suitable for a range of abilities. Construction sheets are available for visitors to recreate the major institutions and attractions that identify the National Capital, from Australian Parliament House to the National Carillon.
