Construction is nearly complete on the brand new Waste Transfer Station in Bushley, which is all set to open on Tuesday 10 December.

Chair of Council’s Waste Committee, Councillor Neil Fisher, said the transfer station is eagerly anticipated in the Western Districts.

“We have been working closely with the community to transition away from the old roadside bins since they had to be closed late last year,” said Cr Fisher.

“We resolved to build this new transfer station when the previous roadside bin stations were closed, and we searched all available options between Stanwell and Westwood to find a site that best suited our selection criteria.

“The new transfer station will provide residents in the Western Districts with safe, reliable waste and recycling services that are also accessible and convenient.

“Residents will be able to drop off a variety of recyclable items for free, such as large white goods, empty oil bottles and drums, fire extinguishers and gas bottles as well as green waste – just like at our other transfer stations around the Rockhampton Region – making it easier than ever for people in this area to recycle.

“The transfer station will also accept domestic general waste, as well as offer the drumMUSTER chemical container recycling program.

“This means that residents will be able to drop off eligible empty and cleaned agvet chemical containers for free. The collected containers will then be recycled into useful items such as fence posts, irrigation pipes, and underground cable cover.

“Currently, the only other transfer station to offer this service in the region is at Gracemere.

“The last interim collection service at Gogango, Westwood and Bushley will take place next Sunday, 8 December.

“On Tuesday 10 December we’ll be hosting an Open Day at the transfer station with an official ribbon cutting.

Divisional Councillor Cherie Rutherford said she is looking forward to the Open Day.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to invite the community to come along and join us for a chat over a free sausage sizzle,” said Cr Rutherford.

“We’ll have officers on site to talk about how the transfer station works, as well as offer some handy hints on how to save money by separating your load and recycling right.”

The Open Day will take place on Tuesday 10 December from 3pm to 6pm.

The new Bushley Waste Transfer Station is located on 211 Sandy Creek Road.
