Calling Young Leaders: Rockhampton's Rural Ambassador and Showgirl Com
Published on 15 January 2025
Rockhampton Regional Council is proud to announce the return of two iconic competitions that celebrate the spirit of rural Queensland and empower young leaders in the agricultural community.
Councillor and Show Committee Member Grant Mathers is excited about the opportunity for local youth to play a pivotal role in the Rockhampton Agricultural Show as part of the Showgirl and Rural Ambassador competitions.
"The Showgirl and Rural Ambassador programs are more than just awards – they're a platform for our Region's brightest young talents to shine, advocate for agriculture, and develop crucial leadership skills," said Councillor Mathers.
The 2025 Rural Ambassador and Showgirl competitions are now open for nominations, inviting passionate individuals aged 20-30 for the Rural Ambassador Award and 18-28 for the Showgirl Award to step forward and represent their community.
Participants have the chance to win impressive prize packages:
First Place: $1,000 cash prize, official sash, celebratory flowers, and a mayoral invitation to civic events.
Runner-Up: $500 in cash and vouchers, official sash, and commemorative flowers.
"These awards offer an unparalleled opportunity for professional development," says Advance Rockhampton Tourism and Events Manager Zac Garven.
"Participants will gain invaluable experiences, from community volunteering to leadership workshops, networking with industry leaders, and representing the Rockhampton Agricultural Show and our community," said Mr Garven.
“Proud 2024 winners Emily Wickham (Showgirl) and Shikira Stehbens (Rural Ambassador) have already demonstrated the transformative power of these competitions, showcasing the incredible potential of young rural leaders.”
2024 Showgirl Winner Emily Wickham explains her extraordinary journey as a Showgirl entrant for the first time.
“From my initial interview, where I engaged in lively discussions about my passions, to participating in a dynamic agricultural show filled with panel interviews, fashion parades, and ribbon presentations, each moment has been a celebration of growth and community,” said Ms Wickham.
“The excitement reached new heights during the state finals in Brisbane, where I honed my skills in personal development and etiquette, mingled with esteemed politicians, and proudly represented young women in agriculture. This whirlwind of experiences not only enriched my life but also reinforced my commitment to empowerment and community. As I reflect on this incredible journey, I cherish the memories and connections made along the way.”
Proudly sponsored by the Great Western Hotel, these competitions offer more than just a title – they're a launching pad for future agricultural leaders.
