Calling locals to vote for Rockhampton in the Top Tourism Town Awards
Published on 10 May 2024
Rockhampton has secured a place as one of Queensland’s top tourism towns after being selected as a finalist in the Queensland Tourism Industry Council’s (QTIC) Top Tourism Town Awards.
This annual award recognises outstanding regional destinations, honouring communities that demonstrate a commitment to delivering excellent visitor experiences. The program is a two-part process consisting of a written submission judged by a panel of tourism professionals, which resulted in our successful placement as one of four finalists in the population over 5,000 category, and the second involves public voting up until 17 May 2024.
Rockhampton Region Mayor, Tony Williams, said taking out the title of Top Tourism Town now comes down to the public vote. It is the perfect time to ask locals to show their support and love of the region.
“We are so proud of our region and the many events, sites and attractions we have on offer,” Mayor Williams said.
“Having hosted Rockynats and Beef2024 already this year, we know locals are fantastic at welcoming visitors, and this would be great recognition of each and every individual in our region who make Rockhampton a great place to visit and stay and something we can build on in the years to come.
“In 2023 the Rockhampton Region welcomed over 605,000 visitors to our local area and supported over 2,100 full time jobs. It’s a big driver of local economic activity and it supports so many of our local businesses, including our local hotels, restaurants and retail stores.”
Advance Rockhampton Tourism and Events Manager, Zac Garven, said inclusion in the QTIC awards would add to Rockhampton’s reputation as a destination of choice for holidays makers, corporate travellers, and event goers.
“Awards such as these not only demonstrate the pride we have in our region, but also put us at the forefront of people’s minds when they are selecting their next holiday destination. Rockhampton has so many wonderful tourism experiences and this is a great way to put Rocky on the Radar as a destination of choice to travellers,” Mr Garven said.
“Through Council’s Advance Rockhampton unit, Explore Rockhampton’s tourism campaigns are delivering in spades through modern, engaging and action-packed presentations and we are eager to continue to build on this success going forward.”
Rockhampton’s successful submission was for the Explore Rockhampton with your mates campaign, which has already garnered podiums at the Queensland and Australian Tourism Awards. The campaign follows the lived experience of two content creator mates from Sydney exploring the great attractions and sites the Rockhampton region has to offer.
QTIC’s awards program is part of the Australian Tourism Awards series, and as a State winner Rockhampton would then have the opportunity to represent Queensland at the National Awards, to be in the running to be named Australia’s Top Tourism Town.
