Cash bonus for charity animal rescue groups

From today Rockhampton Regional Council will offer a cash bonus to charity animal rescue groups to rehome animals from the Rockhampton pound  with a $100 cash bonus for a dog and $50 cash bonus for a cat.

Mayor Margaret Strelow said the $100 cash bonus was part of the suite of measures to make sure that as many animals as possible were finding their way into new homes.

Mayor Margaret Strelow said that Capricorn Animal Aid would be the big winner.  

“Capricorn Animal Aid currently take just under half of all of our rehomed animals. Hopefully this will help their budget in a meaningful way,” Mayor Strelow said.

“We were already offering first year registration free of charge and free microchipping to charity rescue groups. This will continue as part of the new package.”

Councillor Ellen Smith said that the bonus would make Rockhampton animals more attractive to rescue agencies down south.

“At the moment the cost of transport of our animals makes it harder for Southern rescue agencies to afford to take them,” Cr Smith said.

“The $100 bonus would cover most of the transport cost and give animals from our pound the same chance at being rehomed as animals in the larger population centres.”
