Rockhampton Regional Council is inviting the community to celebrate Botanic Gardens Day this Sunday with free walking tours and a plant sale at Rockhampton Botanic Gardens.

Deputy Mayor Drew Wickerson said Botanic Gardens Day was the perfect opportunity for the community to gather together in our picturesque gardens.

“Botanic Gardens Day is an annual day that celebrates the role of plants in our lives, and the important work botanic gardens undertake every day, conserving them for future generations,” Deputy Mayor said.

“We are so lucky to have the Botanic Gardens in Rockhampton, and to have volunteers who dedicate their time to its upkeep.

“Our gardens are something to really celebrate – it boasts an incredible array of plant life, is one of the oldest and most established public gardens in Queensland, and is picturesque to say the least.

“To celebrate Botanic Gardens Day, the Friends of the Gardens volunteer group is hosting a cash-only plant sale from 10am-2pm in the Glass House, next to the Spencer Street roundabout.

“There will be hundreds of plants for sale, ranging from indoor house plants to a wide variety of outdoor shrubs and groundcovers.

“Visitors can also enjoy free walking tours of the gardens with a local tour operator, departing from the Glass House between 12pm and 2pm and dependant on demand.”

Rockhampton Friends of the Gardens Vice President Linda Broun said she was very happy to once again be hosting a plant sale in celebration of Botanic Gardens Day.

“Our volunteer group are so passionate about our gardens and love being given the opportunity to contribute to growing and maintaining such a beautiful space,” Mrs Broun said.

“I’ve been volunteering at the Botanic Gardens since 1999 and there is such a wonderful sense of satisfaction in helping to achieve something, as well as the camaraderie with other volunteers.

“To help us continue this work, we’re excited to host another plant sale in celebration of Botanic Gardens Day this Sunday.

“Please pop on down and say hello, pick yourself a plant, and enjoy a walking tour through our gardens.

“All proceeds will go towards the Friends of the Gardens fundraising efforts to help maintain our region's beautiful gardens.”
