Celebrate our Rural Fire Service volunteers this week
Published on 18 June 2015
This week marks Rural Fire Service Week – a state wide celebration recognising the thousands of men and women who volunteer their time to help keep Queensland communities safe.
This inaugural weeklong event is set to see dozens of activities held around the State over the upcoming days, with the local area among the list.
Chair of Council’s Disaster Committee Councillor Tony Williams said the week and its upcoming events are an opportunity for the community to learn about their local brigades and also say thank you to its members.
“Over the years, Council have worked with fire and emergency crews including rural fire-fighters on fire trails and local emergencies,” Cr Williams said.
“The brigades do a tremendous amount of work and will no doubt be on their toes for the next few seasons also after TC Marcia and the extra fuel load added around our area.
“Each volunteer deserves praise for their efforts and dedication,” he said.
The Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) is made up of approximately 35 000 volunteers, with around 1500 rural fire brigades and 2400 fire wardens. Roles of RFSQ volunteers include firefighting, community education, fundraising, administration and more.
