Charge for private grey water treatment systems

Over the past week, Councillors have received numerous complaints regarding a $64 charge for the registration and upkeep of records in relation to private grey water treatment systems.

Acting Mayor Cr Cherie Rutherford said the fee had existed in Council’s fees and charges for a number of years, however, it was not something Council had charged for in the past.

“The sudden introduction of this fee has certainly taken us by surprise, not to mention the affect is has had on those residents who were recipients of the charge,” Cr Rutherford said.

“We certainly feel it is inappropriate the way this fee has been introduced and have called for a report to come to Tuesday’s Council meeting.

“It is important to us to better understand the legislative requirements on Council in regard to these systems, the impacts to Council and the effects this has on our residents.

“I would like to assure those at the up to 500 affected residences that we have heard you and we will be taking your concerns to Council next Tuesday when we have an opportunity to consider this matter and our options further.”
