The chimpanzee exhibit at Rockhampton Zoo is looking better than ever with Council crews on site today upgrading the arboreal walk and climbing logs.

Parks Committee Chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the upgrades took place under the watchful eyes of the troop who monitored the works from the enclosure next door.

“It was quite remarkable actually, you could see the interest on the troops’ faces as they watched the works get underway,” Cr Rutherford said.

“These works extended the arboreal skywalk to give the chimpanzees even more climbing structures as well as replacing some of the wooden posts around the enclosure which were starting to age.

“The current enclosure was built in 2009 so the upgrades were about due and it’s important we have the best possible environment for our animals.

“We know the chimpanzees are one of our main attractions, especially since baby Capri came along, so it’s also nice for our visitors to see the hard work and care that goes in to making sure they are well looked after.

“The chimps are already quite good at putting on a show for people so I can’t wait to see their antics as they explore the new additions.” Cr Rutherford said.

The Zoo is open every day of the year apart from Christmas Day from 8am to 4.30pm, and entry is free.
