Enjoy views of the Fitzroy River from a different vantage point at Rockhampton Regional Council’s Barrage Open Day, 23 November.

The Fitzroy River Barrage Open Day is from 8am to 2pm with Water Councillor Edward Oram encouraging the community to come and support the day which has free entry.

“Our Barrage is the centrepiece of our water supply process, separating the fresh water upstream from the tidal salt water downstream, to create the water storage required for our Region’s drinking water supply,” Cr Oram said.

“We want to showcase this key water supply infrastructure and provide the rare opportunity for the community to come on a guided tour across the barrage.

“From 9am to 1pm, the barrage will be open for guided tours by our Fitzroy River Water staff, allowing the community to get up close and see our river from a perspective that is not usually available to the public.

“The guided tours will include the history of the barrage and how it plays an important role in providing fresh drinking water to meet the long-term water supply needs of our community.”

In addition to the guided tours, Environmental Sustainability Councillor Elliot Hilse said there will be several educational displays to explore.

“The educational stalls are interactive and engaging for all ages, as looking after our environment is something all members of the community can do by adopting simple habits like being water wise,” Cr Hilse said.

Anyone interested in participating in the guided tours must wear enclosed shoes, with tour forms available to fill out on the day.

The open day also includes kids’ activities plus food and drink vendors, with entry and parking via Larcombe St in Park Avenue.
