Come say g’day to our local Olympians at Friday's Street Party on Quay

Our very own cycling golden girl Anna Meares and Olympic rower Sasha Belonogoff, who won silver at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, will be celebrated for their incredible achievements at tomorrow’s Quay Street party.
Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said we are fortunate to have two of the city’s admirable Olympic athletes join us in a celebration that is about new beginnings.
“We are very proud of all of our home-grown athletes who represent Rockhampton and our country, and are we very grateful to have both Anna and Sasha join us in a celebration that is very much about new beginnings,” Mayor Strelow said.
“We invite the entire community to join us in congratulating Anna on her career as she retires from cycling and celebrate Sasha as he begins his new Olympic adventure.”
Friday night’s celebration at the Riverbank’s revitalised Stage 1A will kick off with a ribbon cutting ceremony followed by a special presentation for our Olympians.
Given Rockhampton's recent track record at triggering rain during important events, Mayor Margaret Strelow has called in the services of local forecaster Mike Griffin to ensure we cover every base for the Street Party on Friday night.
“I think we are all getting a little bit gun shy, or should that be raining shy, when it comes to Council run events, so we have received a more detailed breakdown of probabilities for rain, first-hand,” she said.
“The belief is that Council should be able to hold the event with minimal disruption but we might have to pack up early.”
On that basis Council will forge ahead but advises the community to stay tuned to Facebook and to listen to radio 4RO who are doing an outside broadcast during the street party.
Come along and enjoy a host of market stalls, entertainment from one of the Region's most recognisable musical names, Weathered, plenty of food options and festive activities for children.
