Council’s class act to increase international tourism

Rockhampton Regional Council is committed to building our education and trade links overseas with Councillors today approving a delegation to China to attract more international students to study and live here.
Advance Rockhampton will next month visit six cities in eight days and meet with government agencies to promote Rockhampton’s education industry, attract long-term students and study tours.
Mayor Margaret Strelow said Rockhampton has a proud history of attracting and supporting international students.
“The International Education and Training industry is worth about $9 million a year to our economy with students mainly travelling from China, Germany, India, Japan and the United States to study here,” Mayor Strelow said.
“Council is committed to driving economic growth and creating local jobs through diversifying our economy and international study tourism is one of our key target areas.
“Council secured funding from Trade and Investment Queensland late last year to carry out a feasibility study of the current education environment, as well as launch a ‘study cluster’ next month which we’re calling Study Rockhampton.
“This will attract 13 major international education agencies from Brisbane and overseas and, as a result, 14 delegates will visit the Rockhampton Region to learn about the quality education the area provides.
“I’d like to acknowledge the support of the Queensland Government, Innovation and Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones and Trade and Investment Queensland for their contribution because these partnerships are what we need to deliver results for our region.
“Council is working hard to market and promote education in our region to create a strong and competitive international education brand for Rockhampton.
“We look forward to continuing to support the growth of international education in Central Queensland,” Mayor Strelow said.
Council would also like to acknowledge the support of Education Queensland International, local schools, CQUniversity, Capricorn Chamber of Commerce and CQ Hospital and Health Service.
