Council calls for tenders for Gracemere pound

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow has announced that tenders are to be called for a 20 kennel module to be built at the Gracemere pound to safely house impounded animals.

At the last Council meeting prior to Caretaker period, Council set aside $400,000 to provide a more suitable facility to replace the current pound.

Mayor Strelow said she is delighted to have found a solution that will have the capacity to expand should more kennels be needed in the future.

“It is anticipated that the 20 kennel module will work in conjunction with the proposed pound at the Correctional Centre,” she said.

“If, after the investigation, it is found that the pound at the prison is not viable then Council can build one or two additional modules at the Gracemere site.”

Mayor Strelow said the new location will be a clean, sanitised and easily serviceable site providing a desired level of safety for both staff and animals.

“The new pound location will give better facilities not just for the animals who are in our care but also for our staff, so it’s a win-win solution and can easily be expanded should the need arise.”
