Rockhampton Regional Council has taken another proactive step in advancing the Region’s sustainability, by today endorsing a draft environmental strategy that will pave the way forward for the next four years.

Council’s Environment spokesperson, Councillor Drew Wickerson, said today marked a major milestone not only for Council, but for the whole Region, in working towards a cleaner, greener future.

“In January we announced plans to develop a strategy that would dramatically improve and advance environmental sustainability in the Region, and we are thrilled to present the draft Environmental Sustainability Strategy in Council today,” Cr Wickerson said.

“Overall, we know that the future isn’t just somewhere we’re going - it’s something we’re creating, and we want to create a more environmentally sustainable future. At its heart, this is what this strategy is all about – identifying and creating opportunities that allow each of us to better care for our environment.

“The draft outlines Council’s vision for sustainability in the Region and lists individual targets and actions over four key areas. It identifies ways we can enhance the liveability of our Region, empower our community to live more sustainably, and ensure that what resources we have, we use wisely.

“Water and energy efficiency, increased urban canopies, eco-tourism, strengthened partnerships, and continued clean ups of our waterways are just some of the opportunities identified,” Cr Wickerson said.

Cr Wickerson said that Council is eager to hear the community’s thoughts on the draft strategy and will roll out consultation from next Monday, June 4.

“Environmental sustainability is something that we can all achieve, and Council wants to provide the opportunity for our community to provide feedback on this draft,” Cr Wickerson said.

“It will be available from Council’s website from next week and our environment team will be out and about throughout June asking you your thoughts.”

The draft strategy will be available here from June 4.
