Council restores pride in Showgrounds with facility upgrades

Rockhampton Regional Council has unveiled major improvements to a jewel in our Region’s crown – the Showgrounds.
Thanks to the State Government’s Works for Queensland program, over a quarter of a million dollars has been spent on upgrading and improving the venue.
Hosting major events which attract tens of thousands of people from Rockhampton and beyond, including the reputable Beef Week, Rockhampton Show and Speedway, the Showgrounds regularly feature in our Region’s calendar.
State Member for Rockhampton Bill Byrne said the improvements will be well appreciated by event organisers and the community.
“It’s great to see the Council take pride in its community assets by putting forward projects like this under the first round of the Works For Queensland program, delivering over $9 million in infrastructure upgrades for the Region,” Mr Byrne said.
“It’s particularly great to see these upgrades completed in time for our major events like Beef Week in May 2018, where the entire venue is used by locals and people visiting out of town.”
Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said the $270,000 has been spent on making the Showgrounds more accessible, completing repairs, redecorating, and on a major enhancement at the People’s Bar – a brand new covered veranda.
“Revamping the many facilities within the grounds has been a priority for Council for some time now, and thanks to the State Government, it’s a project we have been able to bring forward and complete,” Mayor Strelow said.
“Now even more people will enjoy the venue with improved accessibility including a brand new lift at the People’s Bar and new pathways. Works also included repairs and repainting throughout, new toilet facilities, as well as new lighting, kitchen upgrades and fans to keep the Pavilions cooler.”
Council is proud to have recently received an additional $9.05 million in round two of the Works for Queensland program which will fund a further 17 projects across the Region.
