Council to fly the Region’s flag at Adani and Downer Mining Meeting

Rockhampton Region Councillors will be flying the Rockhampton flag this week as they head to Mackay for the Bowen Basin Mining Club meeting with Adani Mining and Downer Mining.
Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said Council is now even more eager to attend the meeting following the State Government's latest announcement of three mining leases being approved for the Carmichael Mine site over the weekend.
"Council has been productively planning for the eventual opening of the Galilee Basin for the last few years and now we are another step closer," she said.
"We have already met with Downer EDI who have the contract to provide the construction of mine infrastructure and mining services at the Carmichael Coal Mine site.
"We also need to keep on the front foot with Adani - the jobs spin off from the seven year construction project will be huge and we need to be in a position to take advantage of this."
Councillor Neil Fisher, who has been a key advocate in the support for the resources sector, will lead the delegation on Thursday with Mayor Strelow.
"Rockhampton has skilled people that are shovel ready to assist Adani's Carmichael Mine project to proceed," Cr Fisher said.
"Mining is part of Rockhampton's DNA from the city's first breath, so we're very keen to capture any opportunities with Adani."
The Carmichael coal and rail project is a $21.7 billion project in the north of the Galilee Basin, and north-west of Rockhampton.
