Council workers providing 24/7 community support

Nearly 800 Rockhampton Regional Council staff have hit the streets to assist in the mammoth clean-up following Cyclone Marcia. 

Council Chief Executive Officer Evan Pardon said that staff at all levels and irrespective of normal duties have donned their sneakers help residents across the region.

“Our staff have shown a tremendous amount of commitment and dedication, working around the clock to get the region back on track,” Mr Pardon said.

“It is humbling to see teams from different sections working together, undertaking jobs that aren’t what they normally do.

“They have put the safety and recovery of the community before their individual and family needs; many still without power and with a huge clean-up of their own to attend to once the larger task has been complete.”

On-ground staff numbers were increased from 300 to 800 as soon as it was safe for employees to get into town, and they have been backed up by a few hundred staff working 24/7 since last Thursday in the LDCC.

“There is still a huge amount of work to do, but the region is fortunate to have field support from Central Highlands Regional Council, Contractors and other volunteer groups,” Mr Pardon said.

“I could not be prouder of our team and it is times like these that make me appreciate what a great group of people we have working for us.”

Mr. Pardon said that staff will continue their efforts until Rocky is on the full road to recovery
