Hundreds of local residents have taken up an opportunity to microchip, desex or vaccinate their pets through a new pet care initiative of Rockhampton Regional Council.

Planning and Regulatory Committee Chair, Councillor Ellen Smith, said Council had just wrapped up the first Snip and Chip initiative and was thrilled with the results.

“Microchipping, vaccinations and desexing are all incredibly important when it comes to pet care, and Council is committed to working with residents to keep their dogs and cats happy, healthy and safe wherever possible,” Cr Smith said.

“We know that the fees associated with pet care can at times be difficult for pet owners to cover, and through both online registrations and an event held last Sunday, Council was able to offer vouchers and discounted pet care opportunities to local residents.

“Through this initiative, residents were able to microchip their cats and dogs for just $10, with Council covering the rest of the cost. No one wants their pet to go missing, but if that ever happens, microchipping undoubtedly increases their chances of returning home.

“As well as microchipping, we were able to provide eligible card owners the opportunity to book their cats and dogs in for desexing and vaccinations at a heavily subsidised cost.

“We have just finalised the results of the program and are thrilled to report that over 530 vouchers were distributed to local pet owners. This includes over 200 microchipping vouchers, with 70 dogs microchipped at the event itself on Sunday.

“Overall, it is a fantastic starting point and we are already looking to build on it further in the future.”
