Rockhampton Regional Council is pleased to announce the completion of the Stanwell Waroula Road upgrade, a significant project aimed at improving road safety and infrastructure.
Commencing in October 2023, the project has successfully delivered vital improvements along a 5km stretch of Stanwell Waroula Road.
Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams said investing in our rural roads is crucial for our Region.
“Stanwell Waroula Road is a critical link between Glenroy Road and the Capricorn Highway, providing essential access for residents, particularly during times of flooding,” Mayor Williams said.
“Projects like this one help us connect our residents, support local economies, and ensure that emergency services can respond swiftly.
“Council is continuing to drive projects like this, which are essential for economic growth, building flood resilience, and supporting local jobs.”
Infrastructure Councillor Marika Taylor said the extensive works undertaken by crews will greatly reduce the risk of accidents and improve transportation efficiency.
“The 5km section of Stanwell Waroula Road saw the road widened, new pavement overlay, and surface sealing. Additionally, 36 culverts were expanded, and a floodway was replaced to further bolster road safety and reliability,” Cr Taylor said.
“The widened bitumen road is now better equipped to handle increasing traffic and heavy vehicles, which are common in this rural area. This upgrade will also help reduce long-term maintenance requirements.
“While there were some short-term inconveniences during construction, the long-term benefits of improved safety, accessibility, and convenience are substantial.
“We want to thank the Australian Government for their funding and the local community for their patience and understanding during the construction period.”
This project was funded through a $1.7 million contribution from the Australian Government’s Remote Roads Upgrade Pilot Program.
