The Region’s health and fitness credentials will be on full display this weekend, as the 2018 CQ Health 2018 Sports and Health Expo takes over Rockhampton Showgrounds. Attracting thousands each year, the expo is aimed at encouraging the community to get active, enjoy a healthy lifestyle and eat a balanced diet.

The free event, which runs this Sunday from 9am until 1.30pm, will feature over 80 sport and recreation clubs, health services providers, gyms, and sport retailers. There will be workshops and demonstrations throughout, including a $300 prize for the person who can do the most burpees in one minute, as well as a ninja warrior inspired obstacle course from CrossFit CQ.

The expo has also secured a special guest in Angus Waddell, an Olympic and Commonwealth Games athlete, who will share his story of being a young Brisbane boy whose love of sport led him to represent Australia in both high jumping and swimming. This makes him the only athlete in history to compete for their country in both athletics and swimming at the Commonwealth Games.

Sport and Recreation Committee Chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the initiative was a fantastic way of boosting participation in sport, recreation and health within the Region.

“We have a proud and active sporting community here in the Rockhampton Region and this event is a great way to support that lifestyle and get others to join in so they can make a difference in their own health,” Cr Rutherford said.

“The fact we have classes for the under 5s and over 60s, and workshops aimed at the complete beginner as well as the established exerciser,  means there really will be something for everyone. As well as fitness stalls, Cr Wickerson will also be providing tips on cooking for a busy lifestyle.

“The expo is now in its 10th year and Council is incredibly excited to have signed a three-year partnership with CQ Hospital and Health Service to deliver this event into the future,” Cr Rutherford said.

CQ Health Chief Executive Steve Williamson said the health service was delighted to support this important community event.

“This expo aligns perfectly with CQ Health’s vision of creating great care for Central Queenslanders, and with our mission to improve the health of Central Queenslanders,” Mr Williamson said.

“If we can encourage more residents to lead active and healthy lifestyles, it will reduce demand on hospital and health services in the future. This is a major part of our strategic plan, Destination 2030.”

The CQ Health 2018 Sports and Health Expo will be held on Sunday 4 February from 9am to 1.30pm at the Robert Schwarten Pavilion, Rockhampton Showgrounds. You can find more information and a see a full program here.
