The Dog Agility Course at Kershaw Gardens has reopened to the public.

Rockhampton Regional Council’s Parks and Recreation Committee Chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford said it was another step forward to restoring community access to Kershaw Gardens.

“The Dog Agility area is a great resource for our community and I know many residents have been very eager to get their pets back out for some enriching exercise,” Cr Rutherford said.

“I’d like to thank the community for their patience and understanding once again and I’m delighted dogs can use the area for extra activities alongside the existing pathways across the Gardens for their walks.”

Councillor Rutherford said as the Gardens have been progressively restored, the agility course was then able to reopen.

“After the cyclone there was damage to the fencing around the course and some of the agility items.

“Our main work depot for restoring the Gardens was also located on the flat ground near the course and we needed to consider community safety while we continued works, particularly with heavy machinery. Since several areas of the Gardens have now opened up, we’ve been able to realign the depot area to restore access to the agility course.

“It was evident through feedback and during consultation late last year that our community wanted Kershaw Gardens to remain a dog friendly park, so it was important that we reopened the agility course as soon as we could.”

The dog agility area and the broader Kershaw Gardens is a wonderful open space for developing a healthy lifestyle for both owners and pets by providing both passive and active recreation.

Kershaw Gardens has been progressively reopened since Cyclone Marcia, with community consultation on the draft Concept Master Plan late last year proving very positive.
