Don’t forget your pets this Easter!

Rockhampton Regional Council is reminding the community about the importance of responsible pet ownership over the Easter break.

Planning and Regulation Councillor Grant Mathers said each year Council receives an increase in complaints over school holiday periods in relation to barking dogs and wandering animals.

“Sometimes, it is as simple as accidentally leaving the gate open when going out for the day,” Cr Mathers said

“It’s so important that our pets are safe and secure – whether you are heading out for the day, or even for a couple of hours.

“If you are going away on holidays this Easter, consider placing your pet in a boarding facility – or perhaps ask a friend who may be willing to be a ‘pet sitter’.

“Pets who are left alone during the holidays can become distressed, and with over sixteen thousand dogs registered in the Rockhampton Region, that can mean a lot of barking!

“Even better, consider a holiday where you can take your pet with you! There plenty of great pet friendly accommodation options across Australia for your family to enjoy.

“If you are staying home this Easter, your furry family member does not have to miss out on festivities.

“You can organise an Easter hunt for them using their favourite treats – in moderation of course- as well as including them in trips to the beach and other family outings.

“Many cafés in the region have pet friendly dining options as well.

“As always, please remember that chocolate can be toxic to many domestic pets, including cats, and especially dogs.”
