Exercise Wallaby kicks off in 2024 with arrival of Antonov AN-124

Exercise Wallaby is set to begin with the arrival of one of the world’s largest cargo aircraft, the Antonov AN-124 at Rockhampton Airport.
The 402-tonne Antonov AN-124 plays a pivotal role in the transport of smaller aircraft, including Apache helicopters, between Australia and Singapore as well as other military hardware and assets required for the exercise.
Rockhampton Airport plays a key role in the exercise through its ability to land large-scale aircraft like the Antonov and accommodate military aircraft on-site in addition to its commercial operations.
This year marks the 34th annual Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) military exercise which utilises the nearby Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area under a longstanding agreement between the Australia Government and the Republic of Singapore.
In 2024, Exercise Wallaby will see additional troops visit the region and participate in the military training following a multi-billion investment in Shoalwater over recent years.
Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor, Tony Williams, said once again the arrival of the Antonov signalled the start of Exercise Wallaby which would span over three months and see up to 6,600 troops visit the region.
“Exercise Wallaby is a great example of Australia’s longstanding engagement and partnership with the Republic of Singapore and the important role our region plays in military exercises and training,” Mayor Williams said.
“Not only does the nearby Shoalwater Bay Training Area provide a purpose built environment for military training and exercises but we are seeing the benefit of our investment in Rockhampton Airport and its facilities with it being one of the few regional airports which can support the landing of large-scale aircraft like the Antonov.
“I want to welcome the Singapore Armed Forces and all those participating in this year’s exercise.
“Rockhampton has played a crucial role in Singapore’s defence preparedness for decades and we are proud of the partnership we have with the Singaporean Armed Forces and the government of Singapore more broadly.”
Exercise Wallaby also provides important economic benefits to the Rockhampton Region with strong investments in the local hospitality, accommodation and tourism sectors.
Plane enthusiasts who wish to see aircraft can take in the action from the plane spotting platform located on Apron Drive, near the freight area.
The Antonov is expected to depart Rockhampton on Thursday, before making a return trip on Friday.
Estimated arrival and departure times are as follows:
- Departure: Thursday 28 August at approx. 7am
- Arrival: Friday 30 August at approx. 5pm
- Departure: Saturday 31 August at approx. 6pm
