Get Ready for the predicted heavy rainfall
Published on 10 May 2022
With Severe Weather Warnings issued across the state by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), now is the time to prepare for the possibility of heavy rainfall and localised flooding.
Rockhampton Regional Council’s Local Disaster Management Group Chair Mayor Tony Williams said he strongly encouraged residents to prepare their homes, families and neighbourhoods.
“BoM have suggested we may be in for a very wet few days with a probability of heavy rain in the Rockhampton Region,” Mayor Williams said.
“I would encourage everyone to keep an eye on Council’s Emergency Dashboard for updates and information, including steps you can take to prepare.
‘It is also a timely reminder to check to see if your property has been impacted by the updated flood mapping which resulted in the proposed amendments to the Planning Scheme.
“Recent events in southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales show that extreme and dangerous flooding can happen – and sometimes the predictions don’t reflect the severity of the event.
“While it is hoped that the Rockhampton Region may be spared the worst of the predicted deluge, we still need to take the warnings seriously and start our preparations.
“Council is taking a proactive approach and providing sand piles throughout the Region to assist residents with their preparations.
“Residents who believe they require sandbags to minimise flash flooding impacts on their property should take their own shovel and sandbags to a sand pile location.”
