Take up a fitness challenge today with a range of free or low cost activities thanks to Rockhampton Regional Council and the Queensland Government’s Get Out, Get Active program.

Starting this week, Council’s Sports and Education Services Unit, through Kickstart CQ, will be working with local fitness providers to deliver 12 weeks of free boxing, boot camp, walking and $2 aquafit sessions.

Council’s Parks and Recreation Committee Chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the Get Out, Get Active program was one more step in the right direction to helping our community live healthy and active lifestyles.

“Get Out, Get Active is another great program we’ll be coordinating with the help of local providers to ensure our community continues to learn and actively participate in a healthy lifestyle,” Cr Rutherford said.

“The program really builds on the important messages from the hugely successful CQ Health 2016 Sports and Health Expo last weekend, and we want that momentum to carry onto something our community can now participate in.”

The free and low cost activities are open to all ages and will take place in Council parks and facilities.

“We’ve combined the fitness side with our great outdoors to bring people together in one of our best-loved open spaces at Rigarlsford Park, along with aquafit at the 2nd World War Memorial Aquatic Centre. We also have outdoor sessions at Gracemere and we’re currently exploring options for Mount Morgan,” Cr Rutherford said.

“The program is quite flexible, with four sessions a day, five days a week, meaning more people can find a session suitable for them.

“I’m really encouraging people who need a little push in the right direction to give it a go as there’s no doubt the sessions will be fun, and in a supportive and social setting.

“I’m hoping Council will help start the journey during the 12 weeks and participants will then transition to other fitness programs at their local gym or sporting club for example.”
