Gracemere Library almost ready to open!
Published on 18 August 2017
The wait is almost over for Gracemere residents to have their very own local library as Council puts the final touches on the new facility ready for its official opening next Monday, 28 August.
Over the past few weeks truckloads of books have been delivered to the new library that now occupies former council offices within Gracemere’s Customer Service Centre at Ranger Street.
Councils Chair of Communities Councillor Rose Swadling said she was proud to deliver a service she was passionate about and the Gracemere community deserved.
“Naturally, as a community like Gracemere grows, facilities like a library become essential for families, school kids and elderly people who can really benefit from a great range of free programs and services our libraries offer,” Cr Swadling said.
“The co-location of our Customer Service Centre and a library is going to be extremely convenient for the residents and its location will give us the opportunity to expand in the future if needed.”
Of more than 25,000 active library card members in the Region, almost 4,500 are Gracemere residents. Divisional Councillor Ellen Smith said she can see this number expanding rapidly once the doors open to the library next week.
“For many years now, the residents have begged for their own local library and I completely agreed that it was the right investment for the future of the Gracemere community,” Cr Smith said.
“We will see not only Gracemere residents using this service, but also some of our rural residents too, and if one day we do need to expand, that is nothing short of a positive sign.”
The Gracemere Library will be the fourth in the Region, offering the same popular services that are available at Rockhampton’s North, South and Mount Morgan libraries, including free Wi-Fi and a full range of resources that you can expect to find in a modern library.
A suite of fun library activities and programs will kick off on the opening day including the chance to explore virtual reality, robotics, First Five Forever story sessions, Tech Savvy Seniors sessions, plus tours of the library.
Families are invited to celebrate the official opening at 3.30pm with some extra fun including a jumping castle, face painting, free BBQ and a cutting of the cake.
The Gracemere Library opening hours will be Monday – Friday 9am – 5.30pm and Saturday 1pm – 4.30pm.
