Gracemere Library is on its way!

At last! The Gracemere community is set to receive its own local library following today’s big announcement that Council will set up the service in the former Council offices at Ranger Street.

In today’s ordinary Council meeting, Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said the Ranger Street site is the ideal location for a community that deserves and requires a library service.

“The people of Gracemere have begged and pleaded for their own library for a very long time - it’s something they are very passionate about,”  Mayor Strelow said.

“Having a local library in Gracemere is something Cr Smith has fought hard for and detailed discussions have been held to determine the most appropriate site.

“I truly believe the co-location of Council’s Customer Service Centre and a library in one space has so many benefits and there are opportunities to expand as the Gracemere community grows.

“This building was an investment by the Council of the day, and when it was built there was great foresight in the building; it lends itself perfectly to a library.”

Today Mayor Strelow requested budget estimates to be prepared for inclusion in the next financial year budget for the establishment and operation of the library service.

“If there’s any significant expenses, we will wait until the next budget, but at this stage we are expecting a relatively smooth sailing project," she said.
