Gracemere Waste Transfer Station makeover gets underway

Rockhampton Regional Council is this week commencing upgrades to the Gracemere Waste Transfer Station.

RMS Engineering & Construction Pty Ltd have been engaged to undertake the redevelopment works which are projected to take place over the next 6 months, subject to weather conditions.

Rockhampton Regional Waste and Recycling Councillor Shane Latcham said this much needed upgrade will greatly improve not only the functionality, but also the visual amenity of the site.

“Once complete, it will feature re-surfaced asphalt road access, new staff and visitor parking areas, a new gate house and recycling drop off areas.

“It is important to note that these works do require the removal of trees along Allen Road and Lucas Street to allow for historic landfill to be adequately capped.

“An Environmental Management Plan is in place to minimise the impact of construction on native flora and fauna and an Environmental Scientist will be onsite for the removal of any trees as a fauna spotter.

“These areas will then be revegetated with over 760 new plants which will, in time, provide a beautiful natural barrier and focal point as you enter.”

Divisional Councillor Ellen Smith said this redevelopment will finally bring the Gracemere Waste Transfer Station up to par with other transfer stations across the region.

“In recent years we have upgraded the Alton Downs Transfer Station and built new stations in Bushley and Bajool , so we are pleased that we are finally able to deliver this for the Gracemere community,” Cr Smith said.

“Residents will just have to take care when entering the site in the next few months as we will be relocating the waste transfer station to the opposite side of the current facility while the works are carried out, so please be sure to keep an eye out for any directional signage.

“We would like to thank the Gracemere community for their patience while these upgrades are underway, and we look forward unveiling the new and improved facility next year.”
