Help name our new arrival
Published on 02 March 2018
It was less than three weeks ago that Leaky – a chimpanzee at Rockhampton Zoo – gave birth to the first chimp born in Queensland for decades. Now Rockhampton Regional Council wants your help to name the new arrival.
Members of the public are being asked to submit suggested names online, with the best ones shortlisted by a panel of zookeepers and others. Each name on the shortlist will then be assigned to a piece of food and offered to Leaky, and whichever she chooses will become the baby’s name.
Mayor Margaret Strelow said it was only right that the community played a part in naming the newest resident at Rockhampton Zoo.
“Our zoo is such an important part of our community. We have residents who explored it as kids who are now sharing the delights of the animal kingdom with their own children.
“It was important to us that the community played a role in naming the baby chimp, and I look forward to seeing all the – what I am sure will be brilliant – suggestions.
“Once she is named we will be producing toys and merchandise: money raised through this will help pay for the chimp’s care and ensure our zoo will be around for future generations to enjoy.”
Parks Committee Chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford said she hoped all parts of the community would get involved.
“I would love to see school classes and workplaces choosing a name to suggest, as well as individuals across the Region.
“I also expect we are going to have a tough job choosing which names will be offered to Leaky!”
You can submit your suggested name here before 5pm on Friday March 23. The winning name will be announced shortly afterwards.
