Heritage Village calls for volunteers
Published on 24 November 2016
It’s been an action-packed year for the team at the Rockhampton Heritage Village.
And the pace isn’t set to slow down any time soon with a host of great new projects planned for next year.
Rockhampton Regional Council Communities Chair Cr Rose Swadling said she was keen to see more people get involved and lend a helping hand to the village’s “dedicated band of volunteers”.
Cr Swadling said among the projects on the radar in coming months were:
- Construction of a Cobb & Co Coach ticket office;
- Construction of a new boardwalk and viewing platform in the dairy and poultry paddock;
- Set up of a costume shop for visitors to dress in period costume for photo opportunities; and
- Construction of stables for horses.
She said highlights of an exhaustive list of finalised project completed in the past year included the opening of the Village Café, new animal pens, the renovation of “Wal’s” water truck, a new $80,000 vehicle display room and the re-commissioning of the miniature railway.
Cr Swadling said she was keen for any “like-minded folk” who could help to get involved.
“The work volunteers do, along with the spend from the Friends of the Heritage Village, is vital in making this wonderful facility come alive,” Cr Swadling said.
“Our dedicated volunteers have many and varied skills and are central to helping us preserve our history, which is invaluable for our generations of tomorrow.
“However, we would love to have more volunteers.”
She said the village played an important role in the community.
It’s a place for tourists to visit, children to learn educational programs and a reference to our Region’s past. Because of its unique set-up, the Heritage Village is being used in new and innovative ways, including most recently, as the backdrop for a national movie.
All monies raised by the Friends of the Village goes towards maintaining and adding to the facility.
