If I could talk to the animals…
Published on 18 February 2016
Just imagine it. Chattin’ with a chimp in chimpanzee!
And you can at the Rockhampton Zoo on Saturday 20 February as we celebrate our beautiful Botanic Gardens and the difference a year has made since Cyclone Marcia.
Get your questions ready now for Alon, Leakey, Sam and Holly, our chatterbox chimps, or converse with The Colonel, our resident croc, or you could connect with our mischievous otters Soa and Houdini.
Rockhampton Regional Council’s Parks and Recreation Committee Chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford said there’s always a lot of chatter coming from the Zoo and encouraged everyone to check it out.
“What a difference a year has made to our Zoo; it was heartbreaking to see so many trees come down at the Gardens, but our first and foremost thoughts were to ensure our Zoo animals were safe and cared for,” Cr Rutherford said.
“It was quite evident that our zoo family really missed visitors while the Zoo was closed for a short time after the cyclone, which is why I’d love for you to come down, say g’day and let the zoo staff and our animals know how much they are appreciated.
“Our Zoo staff will host talks on our chimps and koalas, as well as feed the crocs, otters and wild lorikeets – you never know you might even get to chat with a chimp!”
Council will be hosting a number of free activities, a free sausage sizzle and entertainment to celebrate our Botanic Gardens and what a difference a year has made since Cyclone Marcia.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will also join the celebrations while she meets and mingles from 11am to 12pm.
