Internationally renowned street artist Lucas Grogan to create mural

Hong Kong, Brunswick, Bali… Rockhampton?  Our city becomes the latest to welcome its walls to internationally renowned Melbourne artist Lucas Grogan and his blanketing blue and white patterns and humorous phrases.

Over the course of a week, the artist will transform a section of Quay Lane into a vivid mural, channelling the recent events of Cyclone Marcia into a circular whorl of vibrant patterns - all painted in his trademark colours of blue and white.

Rockhampton Region Mayor, Margaret Strelow anticipates the mural will be a creative starting point for reinvigorating the cyclone ravaged CBD and will celebrate the heart of the Rockhampton community as a place where people can gather in times of crisis.

“Working with the assistance of local artists and students affected by the cyclone, the mural will facilitate arts led recovery and bolster regional skills development within our creative community,” Mayor Strelow said.

Grogan will commence and complete work on the mural early next week (2–6 March).

Rockhampton residents will also have the chance to see the artist at work as part of a ‘drawing battle’ being organised by the team at The Workshop Rockhampton.

Grogan will be challenging a local illustrator in what is billed to be “The drawing battle to end all drawing battles” on Friday 6 March from 8pm.

A self-confessed Art School drop-out, Grogan spent his formative years learning on the job in public and commercial art galleries in Sydney and Newcastle before his work was featured in a sideshow for the Sydney Biennale of 2008.

Grogan says this is where he says his career “took off”.

Since moving to Melbourne in 2009 Lucas has exhibited in Australia and overseas often working around the clock, seven days a week to produce his fun-filled patterns and designs.

Lucas Grogan is now hot property with his paintings and embroidery featuring in public and private collections and his textile and dinnerware designs embraced by fashionistas and hipsters around the globe.

Vogue International recently featured one of his murals in Brunswick, Melbourne as number 11 out of 15 “Coolest street-style neighbourhoods”.

In a time when the city needs it most, Rockhampton will play host to Grogan’s charming irreverence and delicate patterns.

Watch the artist in action next week as he transforms the guts of Quay Lane into a vibrant place of healing and celebration.
