It's Weedbuster Week!

Weeds are the bane of every gardener’s existence! Let us arm you with knowledge to help protect our natural environment.
Rockhampton Regional Council’s Pest Management Unit will be available to talk to residents about weed control at Stockland Rockhampton on 6, 7 and 8 September from 9am to 4pm.
The Council team will have a stall as part of Weedbuster Week, a State Government initiative designed to raise awareness of weed management.
Children can enter the ‘We Bust Weeds’ Colouring-in Competition(PDF, 260KB) and adults have the chance to win a prize pack from Savage, Barker and Backhouse and True Value Hardware by completing the ‘Pick the Pest Plant Quiz’.
Chair of Council’s Planning and Regulatory Committee, Councillor Ellen Smith said there are several simple tasks people can take to avoid weeds overtaking our local community.
“Disposing of garden waste properly is a big issue. People should be sure to dispose of it in the correct area at the landfill.
“Also avoid the spread of seeds by cleaning your gardening equipment, your vehicle and clothing before leaving a weed-infested area,” Cr Smith said.
Because weeds are such invasive plants, they spread rapidly and have unwanted impacts on agriculture, livestock and the environment.
Garden plant introductions are the primary source of new naturalised plants and weeds in Australia.
“Being selective about the plants you choose for your garden is a great first step towards management of the issue and keeping our gardens weed-free,” Cr Smith said.
