It’s time to celebrate International Children’s Book Day

Rockhampton Regional Libraries will be celebrating International Children’s Book Day with a free picture book giveaway at Southside Library this Saturday.
Communities and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said families with young children are encouraged to come along and join in the celebration.
“The theme of International Children’s Book Day this year is Transport, and our library staff have done a fantastic job at planning a transport themed morning for attendees,” Cr Wickerson said.
“As part of the celebrations, we will be giving away a range of vehicle themed picture books to visitors up to the age of 5 – and this is thanks to State Library of Queensland’s First 5 Forever Community Connections Project.
“There will be a selection of vintage motorbikes from the Historic Motorcycle Club of QLD Rockhampton on display at the front of the library and families can also see ‘Blue’, a meticulously restored 1929 Model A Ford.
“The owners will be there to answer questions and share their passion about these amazing classic vehicles.”
Cr Wickerson said the morning will also provide information on early literacy benefits for parents and carers.
“The library has connected with the local chapter of Australian Literacy Educators’ Association to attend the event and share some of the benefits of early literacy to participants,” Cr Wickerson said.
“Attendees will have an opportunity to become library members on the day, and those under 5 will receive a free First 5 Forever library bag filled with some more goodies.
“Parents and carers play a vital role in building a strong foundation for a child’s future development, and what better place to start that journey to lifelong literacy and learning than your local library.
“Of course, all members of the family are invited to join up to become library members – and membership is free.
“For those that cannot attend this wonderful event, our libraries have some great children’s books available for kids to read and borrow at all our locations.
“Being a member of the library has continued benefits, and gives you access to a range of free activities, resources and literature that you can continue to access for life.
“Our libraries offer something for the whole community – become a library member to access the history centre, study spaces, online resources, internet PCs, wi-fi, sound studio, book and audio lending, library activities and so much more.
“Whether it is International Children's Book Day or just a regular day, spend some time at your local library.”
The event will be held from 9.30am until 11.30am Saturday 2 April 2022.
Rockhampton Region Libraries are open to anyone in the public. Visit Council’s website to view membership details and opening hours.
