This week we celebrate our SES legends and their contributions before, during and after emergencies and their dedication to the community.

Deputy Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) Councillor Drew Wickerson said SES week is designed to thank the incredible volunteers in our community who are there for us when disaster strikes.

“SES Week is an opportunity for Council and the community to show our appreciation for the volunteers in orange,” Councillor Wickerson said.

“As the Deputy Group Leader for the Gracemere SES, I know firsthand that these volunteers play a vital role during a disaster, putting the needs of others before their own.

“Volunteers are involved before and after a disaster. They ensure we are prepared to minimise any potential disruption and assist in the aftermath of a disaster.

“Being part of the SES is an exciting and rewarding way to give back to your local community, and I urge everyone to get involved.

“SES Week is also a timely reminder for every household to ensure you're prepared for the potential of storms, floods, and bushfires.”

Rockhampton SES Local Controller Eddie Cowie said last Saturday marked the beginning of State Emergency Service (SES) Week – a time to come together to recognise and celebrate the achievements of Queensland’s SES volunteers and staff.

“With over 110 SES Volunteers in the Rockhampton SES Unit from Rockhampton, Gracemere and Mount Morgan, we thank each and every SES Volunteer for their tireless commitment to our community, whether it is disasters and emergency response, training, or community engagement,” Mr Cowie said.

“Local SES Volunteers will be set up at the Gracemere Shopping Centre this Saturday 10 September, sharing information about how to volunteer for the SES and disaster preparedness resources.

“This is a great chance to chat with people who understand our region and the hazards we face.

“Everyone there will be able to share information based on their expertise and experience with helpful resources on hand about the SES and disaster preparedness, so it’s worth a chat!”
