Rockhampton has slam-dunked a major national sporting event with confirmation it will host a pre-season match of the National Basketball League on 18 September.
2015 NBL competition finalists the CQUniversity Cairns Taipans will take on the formidable Townsville Crocs at the 2,000 seat indoor sports stadium at CQUniversity’s North Rockhampton campus.
The family-friendly event is the result of collaboration between CQUniversity, Rockhampton Regional Council and Rockhampton Basketball Inc, with flights sponsored by JETGO who start direct flights from Townsville and Gold Coast late September.
Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said the event is an ideal opportunity to show the nation that Rockhampton can support national sporting events and teams.
“This is a wonderful sporting coup for our Region and Council is delighted to support the event. This will be our chance to showcase that Rockhampton is a vibrant event-friendly city and I am confident we’ll see a full-house of enthusiastic basketball fans.
“It’s also a great way to welcome JETGO as our newest airline carrier. They will be transporting the precious cargo from Cairns and Townsville so we hope to give them a great welcome at the airport when they arrive.”
CQUniversity Vice-Chancellor Scott Bowman said he was delighted to host the game by leveraging the goodwill the University has built with the NBL through its sponsorship of the Cairns Taipans.
“We are a national university based here in Rocky and it is fantastic that our support of a national sporting team allows us to bring an event like this to our home town. Go the Taipans!”
Manager of Rockhampton Basketball Inc. Matt Neason said the basketball community of players and fans in Central Queensland are fired up for the big game.
“This event will be one of the biggest sporting highlights that the region has seen in recent years, and our members are excited to be involved in planning and running the event on the night. It’s a huge boost for basketball in the region.
