The Rockhampton Region Show Public Holiday will go ahead as planned on June 11, despite the 2020 Show being cancelled.

Rockhampton Regional Mayor, Margaret Strelow, said that Council had looked into moving the holiday but that it wasn’t possible.

“We were hoping to move the holiday to later in the year for a community celebration once social distancing restrictions are lifted, but the message from the State Government is that the public holiday can’t be moved unless it’s to coincide with a rescheduled Show,” said Mayor Strelow.

“As previously announced, we definitely won’t be in a position to hold an Agricultural Show in 2020, so the option for the public holiday was basically use it or lose it.

“We considered both options in today’s Council meeting, and took into consideration the issue of penalty rates if businesses did open on the public holiday as well as the potential of extra trade and custom for them.

“We decided that given the holiday was already in place we would leave it that way rather than cancelling it completely.

“This is consistent with what most other Queensland councils are doing too, and hopefully we can all use it as an opportunity to spend time with loved ones and support the fantastic businesses we have here in the Rockhampton Region.”
