In less than 24 hours the preliminary designs for the new look Kershaw Gardens has taken over social media with over 20,000 views.

Nearly one hundred people have also completed the online survey that was launched late yesterday afternoon, making it one of the quickest response rates for a Council survey.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said there’s resounding positive comments with many elements of the design.

“The designs really seem to have struck a chord - there’s huge excitement among the community, particularly with young mums and families,” Mayor Strelow said.

“In the process of restoring Kershaw Gardens, we have to put new fill on top, more in some areas than others, and the designers have cleverly worked around those constraints and seen them as opportunities.

“One of the strong elements of the design is the mix of grass mounds and new pathways.”

The off leash dog area, and play areas have also proven to be a huge hit with the community.

“We have purposely made an emphasis on natural play opportunities where kids can still interact with water, but it will be a different experience to our Southside Pool that has water jets and buckets,” Mayor Strelow said.

“We also recognise that shade is a very important element, and while you cannot see images of shade sails in the current design, they will definitely be included in the detailed designs at a later stage.”

Council will conduct a four week consultation period and will visit local shopping malls as of next week where the public can share their feedback that will inform the final design.
