In a senseless act of suspected vandalism, the Region’s beloved Wyatt’s Wonder Web at Rockhampton’s Kershaw Gardens has been destroyed by fire.

Earlier this morning, QFES extinguished the fire which started at the shade sail and appears to be intentionally lit.  This caused substantial damage to parts of the Wonder Web.

Rockhampton Regional Council Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor expressed her absolute disappointment in this mindless act of destruction to a popular children’s playground.

“This is a devastating blow to our beloved Kershaw Gardens centrepiece and our community, particularly at this time of year when families are enjoying our parks during the holidays,” Cr Rutherford said.

“It is shameful acts like this that come at a significant cost, not to mention the disappointment for children and families who appreciate and look forward to using the beautiful spaces we create.”

Due to the extent of the damage, the Wyatt’s Wonder Web is now closed until repairs and a thorough safety assessment can be conducted, which is expected to take place in the New Year.

“Fencing and signage will be in place from today to cordon off the damaged area, however please be assured that other sections of the playground remain open for the community to enjoy,” Cr Rutherford said.

Council is urging anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
