Rockhampton Regional Council is improving maintenance across all six Council cemeteries in the new year.

The maintenance works will involve staff removing any broken, disintegrated, and aged items from Council cemeteries, as well as managing any items that encroach beyond their allocated plots.

These measures have been introduced to remove items that pose a safety risk to visitors and staff, disrespect neighbouring sites by exceeding plot boundaries or are harmful to wildlife or become pollution when left exposed to the elements.

The goal of the upcoming maintenance is to ensure a safe and peaceful environment for family and friends to farewell and remember loved ones.

The process will begin in February 2025 at the Rockhampton Memorial Gardens.

Once complete, staff will systematically work on a site-by-site basis at the North Rockhampton, Gracemere, Bajool, Mount Morgan and South Rockhampton cemeteries.

Due to the sensitive nature of the process, Council is giving ample time for next of kin, family members and loved ones to collect sentimental or precious items that are broken or aged, prior to maintenance works beginning.

The community will be informed through signage at the cemetery entrances, once the process is underway.

Council recognises that cemeteries are important to the community and is carrying out the maintenance to ensure the sites continue to honour the memories of loved ones who have been laid to rest there.
