Mayor Strelow pushes for helipad on Mount Archer

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow has today pushed for a helipad to be constructed on Frazer Park, the peak of Mount Archer, with the imminent threat off bushfire season.
In today’s Performance and Service Committee meeting, Mayor Strelow expressed concern for Mount Archer residents and the need for a back-up exit plan after landslips reduced access to areas of Pilbeam Drive during TC Marcia.
“I understand that this is a big call, but we are down to one single lane on Pilbeam Drive, which we are fortunate to even have left after the extent of damage caused,” Mayor Strelow said.
“We need a backup plan in place immediately should we need to evacuate residents in case of an emergency.”
The existing car park on Frazer Park will be used as the proposed helipad space. No construction works are required, however Council believes a tree may have to be removed to ensure there is enough clearance.
Council resolved to take immediate steps to move forward with the proposal.
“Bushfires are a big risk and this is an immediate step that we can take to ensure the safety of the residents,” she said.
Mayor Strelow also said the matter of fire trails around Mount Archer and the Berserkers will be brought to the attention of the State Government as a matter of urgency.
