Mayor to visit Singapore with Deputy Premier

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow will join Deputy Premier Jackie Trad in a series of meetings in Singapore with businesses and investors as part of a strategy to broaden Rockhampton's relationship with our neighbour.
Mayor Strelow said that we had enjoyed a relationship focused around the military for 25 years but there is so much more that we can do together.
“We have seen Singaporean investment in shopping centres and apartments right around Australia and many Singaporean students come here to study but they have focused on the capital cities,” Mayor Strelow said.
“We need to leverage our long relationship and to present Rockhampton as being more than just a place for military training.”
The visit follows a meeting with Singaporean MP Teo Ho Pin at the APEC Mayor's Summit in July.
“At that meeting we discussed opportunities for investment and for Singaporean students to come to Rockhampton,” she said.
“We also began discussions about an 'Alliance' or 'Sister City' relationship with one of the municipalities of Singapore.
“The Minister offered to facilitate a meeting with a major supermarket chain in Singapore and I am keen to have that meeting to discuss the prospect of more of our beef appearing on their shelves.”
The visit will be a very quick turnaround.
“I will be one day on the ground and a day either side travelling but the opportunity to join the Deputy Premier was just too good to pass up!” Mayor Strelow said.
